the burma cyclone and food shortage

On May 3, 2008, Burma was hit by a devastating cyclone. The Cyclone Nargis crashed into the coast destroying entire villages and battering Rangoon. At this point, 22,464 people have been killed, with another 41,000 missing and feared dead. To read more about this click here.

The International Rice Research Institute is warning that the cyclone will put further pressure on the already tight supply of global food stocks. The cyclone hit Burma’s key rice growing region, the Irawaddy delta. To read more about this, click here.

This is a really terrible thing to happen, especially at a time when food is already so hard to find for the average person living in Asia. We will keep you posted with ways to help!

    What a tragedy…I wish the government of Burma would be more open to humanitarian aid. Unfortunately, its a military dictatorship and things are moving slow..
